Four Team UAE drivers have qualified to participate in the final races of the 2022 Rotax MAX Grand Finals in Portugal, with Maxim Bobreshov, Zain Elhommossany, Kyle Kumaran, and Tony Hogg in action on Saturday.
Unfortunately Theo Kekati, Kayne Cherian and Filippo Parmeggiani will not be in action on Saturday, when the World Champions of Rotax MAX karting will be crowned.
On Friday, in Micro MAX, Bobreshov signaled his intent with a well-worked victory after a race-long battle to ensure he will start the Final from a front-running position, providing Team UAE with the best shot of bringing home a Rotax MAX Grand Finals Champion's trophy.
On the day, Bobreshov fended off a strong field including the likes of Jenson Chalk (Britain), Marco Manson (New Zealand), Majus Mazinas (Lithuania) and Kacper Rajpold (Poland) who are likely to be his biggest rivals on Saturday.
Elhommossany, in the Mini MAX class, recovered from a below-par qualifying and first Heat incident to scrape onto the Grand Finals grid and will be looking to make his way forward on the Saturday.
In the DD2 class, Kumaran spent the whole week going forward, also not helped by a lower-than-expected qualifying. But he recovered well, making places in the Heat races to book a berth in the Grand Final where anything can happen.
Veteran UAE karter Tony Hogg, among the oldest drivers on the grid, will line up for the Grand Final of the DD2 Masters.
Al Ain Raceway and Team UAE Manager, Guy Sheffield summed up Friday at Kartdromo do Algarve: "Maxim was the star for Team UAE today, driving intelligently and with great pace, he turned fourth on the grid into a smart victory among some of the best young Micro MAX drivers in the world.
"Kyle gave a good account of himself in what is the premier Rotax class, to drivers in action including former F1 driver Rubens Barrichello. He is more than capable of a strong result when it matters.
"Zain was not helped by being punted in the first Mini Max Heat race, but he dug deep to book himself a place on the grid, from where he will be able to make his way forward and deliver on Saturday.
"Tony is up against a very competitive field in the DD2 Masters, most drivers are much younger than him but he gave a good account of himself making up four places; in today's Pre-Final; he will start 29th in the Grand Final.
"As for Theo, Kayne, and Filippo, it was a character-building week and a great experience. They did their bit for Team UAE but the highly competitive nature of the Grand Finals week claims even some big scalps including our own Champions," concluded Sheffield
The 2022 Rotax MAX Grand Finals, for all classes, take place on Sunday, bringing to an end an intense and exciting week of racing at the Kartdromo.
